Listed 007: What Was "For the Culture," Or Not, This Week
By Jaylin Paschal
Happy Friday! "Listed" is a series where I (very) briefly discuss cultural happenings that caught my eye throughout the week. Each Friday, expect to find a list giving you a rundown of what's been on my radar.
BARBADOS STREET TO BE NAMED AFTER RIHANNA
The Government of Barbados has announced it will rename St. Michael's Westbury New Road after Rihanna next month. The street is located in the neighborhood in which Rihanna grew up.
KEHINDE WILEY & AMY SHERALD BECOME FIRST BLACK ARTISTS TO PAINT PRESIDENTIAL PORTRAITS
Known for his Hip Hop portraiture, Wiley will paint the President Obama. Sherald will paint the first lady. The portraits will hang in the Smithsonian museum, the Nation Portrait Gallery in the America's Presidents exhibit.
THE MANE EVENT
Gucci Mane's all white wedding was as extravagant as you'd imagine. The ceremony was star-stunned, televised on BET and a trending topic on Twitter.
THE LOUIS VUITTON FOUNDATION PRESENTS 'BEING MODERN: MOMA IN PARIS'
The foundation's latest project (led by Frank Gehry) required partnering with New York's MoMA to ship more than 200 artworks from the museum to bring the exhibit, Being Modern: MoMA in Paris to life. This exhibit will explore the wide range of artworks that the museum has acquired over the years. Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, Pop Art, and more will be included.
TIDAL X ANNUAL CHARITY EVENT
Tidal hosted it’s annual Tidal X charity concert at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The money and donations earned went to disaster relief following Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria, and the earthquakes in Mexico. Performers included JAY-Z, Cardi B, DJ Khaled, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Yo Gotti, A$AP Ferg, Vic Mensa, and Joey Bada$$.
And yes, Bey was there. And yes, she shared her moment with us on Instagram.
VIRGIL ABLOH TEASES IKEA COLLABORATION
IKEA will work with designer Virgil Abloh to produce a collection targeted to millennials moving into their first homes (or, let's be real, studio apartments), which could also include his take on the brand's iconic blue Frakta bag.
JEFF KOONS AND SNAPCHAT TEAMING UP TO BRING ART INTO AUGMENTED REALITY
American artist Jeff Koons has collaborated with Snapchat to bring some of his most famous sculptures to you. Kinda. In nine cities including New York, London, and Los Angeles, a new feature on Snapchat will allow users to walk right up to what appears to be a Jeff Koons sculpture if they are in a specific location.
Jay Z probably won't be impressed (as he performs in front of a 40-foot Koons piece), but I'll think it's cool. "Oh what a feeling, f*** it I want a billion / Jeff Koons balloons, I just wanna blow up," rapped Jay Z on his 2013 track, "Picasso Baby."
That's all I got. We'll chat next week.
